Today we’re going to talk about what PCOS actually is, but in a chill, no-stress, friend-to-friend way. Not like a science textbook, promise! 😌

🌸 What is PCOS?

Okay, so let’s talk about something that way too many girls deal with but no one really talks about properly — PCOS, which stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Sounds scary? It’s not, really. But yes, it does need attention.

So… What Exactly is PCOS?

In simple words:
PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that affects how a woman’s ovaries work. Your body starts making more male hormones (called androgens) than it should. Because of that, your periods might get irregular, you might notice more facial hair, acne, or even gain weight easily.

Your ovaries may also form small fluid-filled sacs (called follicles) that don’t grow into proper eggs. So, ovulation doesn’t happen as it should — and that messes with your cycle and fertility too.

But hey, don’t panic. It’s super common and it’s totally manageable.

How Common is PCOS?

Honestly? Very common.
It’s estimated that 1 in every 10 women of childbearing age has it — and that’s just the number of those who actually know. Many don’t even realize they have it until they face problems like missed periods or difficulty in getting pregnant.

Why is PCOS a Problem?

Because it’s not just about missed periods. PCOS can affect your:

Skin (acne, oiliness)

Hair (thinning or extra growth in odd areas)

Mood (anxiety, mood swings)

Weight (gain or difficulty losing weight)

Fertility (trouble getting pregnant)

It can also increase the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health issues later on if not taken care of.

But Wait… Is It Curable?

There’s no “magic cure,” but YES — you can manage it completely with the right diet, daily movement (like walking or yoga), sleep, and stress control. Some girls need medicine, some don’t. But it all starts with understanding your body.

And that’s why we’re doing this blog. To break it all down — one step at a time.


🔬 What Happens in PCOS?

In a healthy menstrual cycle, the ovaries release an egg (ovulation). In PCOS, this process is disturbed. Due to hormonal imbalance, the ovaries:

Might not release an egg regularly

May develop many small, fluid-filled sacs (follicles) that fail to mature

Produce more androgens (male hormones like testosterone), which causes many of the common symptoms

⚠️ Common Symptoms of PCOS

PCOS symptoms vary from woman to woman, but the most common include:

Irregular periods or no periods at all

Excessive hair growth (face, chest, stomach – hirsutism)

Acne, especially on jawline, back, or chest

Hair thinning or scalp hair loss (like male pattern baldness)

Weight gain or trouble losing weight

Dark patches of skin (especially on neck, groin, or underarms)

Mood swings, depression, or anxiety

Difficulty conceiving (infertility due to lack of ovulation)

🧪 How is PCOS Diagnosed?

There is no single test for PCOS. Doctors usually follow the Rotterdam Criteria, which requires any 2 of these 3:

1. Irregular or absent ovulation (irregular periods)

2. Excess androgen levels (symptoms or blood test)

3. Polycystic ovaries visible on an ultrasound

 

Additional tests may include:

Blood tests (testosterone, insulin, thyroid, LH/FSH ratio)

Pelvic ultrasound

Blood sugar and cholesterol levels

👩‍⚕️ When Should You See a Doctor?

You should visit a gynecologist or endocrinologist if you have:

Irregular or absent periods for months

Excessive facial/body hair

Sudden weight gain or difficulty losing weight

Trouble getting pregnant
